Friend — |

Early in June, I had the pleasure of “meeting” Julia Castanet, a
dedicated volunteer in Ohio. Julia asked me about working on the
campaign at the national level. I shared with her the phenomenal
experience it has been, emphasizing the positive culture Bobby
models. |
|
Our campaign leaders emulate this with kindness, forgiveness,
innovative thinking, and the fastest making of lemonade out of lemons
I have ever seen. Julia was inspired by the examples I gave. |
|
Fast forward to a rally outside the debate hall planned by Georgia
volunteers. Julia, originally from Atlanta, joined the planning team.
They sought an angle that would catch the press's attention. Some
proposed a mock funeral, complete with a coffin, to signify that
democracy is dead. While Julia appreciated the creativity and
resonated with the message, it didn’t feel quite right to her. She
sensed that a mock funeral wouldn't align with Bobby's values. |
|
A few days before the debate, under press deadlines, Julia
advocated for a more positive approach. She suggested, “Hear me out, I
think we can execute this in a positive way. The two candidates
excluded us from the debate stage, but this campaign always turns
lemons into lemonade. Who knows, maybe this will actually help us do
better than we think because people will be saddened by the
performances in the debate, and they will be looking for another
option. We are turning lemons into lemonade. What is something we can
do around this?” |
|
That’s when Melinda Hicks, another volunteer in Georgia, chimed
in. “Julia, that’s it, we need to have a lemonade stand!” |
|
And so, the idea blossomed. Instead of a mock funeral, they set up
a lemonade stand, symbolizing the campaign’s resilience and
positivity. It perfectly captured the spirit of turning challenges
into opportunities and resonated deeply with our campaign’s
ethos. |
