When I was in college, there were 300,000 people incarcerated in the United States. Today, there are 2.3 million. Prisons are a multi-billion dollar industry today. 

The issue of mass incarceration in America is one of the most pressing moral and social challenges of our time. The United States, with less than 5% of the world's population, has nearly 22% of its prison population. This issue is fueled by the prison-industrial complex, which profits from the high volume of incarcerations. 

As President, I am committed to radically transforming our approach to criminal justice towards one that is restorative and healing-focused. Our current system, driven more by punishment than rehabilitation, is not only ineffective but dehumanizing, trapping generations in cycles of violence and imprisonment. It's time we focus on healing the wounds inflicted by mass incarceration and take concrete steps toward a system that is just, fair, and rehabilitative.

My administration will take the following actions to address this crisis:

1. Comprehensive Criminal Justice Reform: Our administration will abolish for-profit prisons, end the War on Drugs, release non-violent drug offenders, enforce a Prisoners Bill of Rights, restore voting rights for ex-felons, end federal "Three Strikes" laws, abolish the Death Penalty, and end cash bail.
   
   
2. Rehabilitation and Reentry Support: We will ensure that released individuals receive adequate support to reintegrate into society. This includes job training, education, and mental health services, fostering an environment where former inmates can become productive, contributing members of society. Re-entry programs will be funded to ease the transition back into society, similar to the Reverse Boot Camp for Veterans. 
   
   
3. Early Intervention and Restorative Justice: We will engage at-risk youth with resources, education, and counseling to prevent cycles of violence and imprisonment. Restorative justice, focused on reconciliation and guided by victims' needs, will allow offenders to confront the human costs of their actions and make amends. This approach will help rebuild communities and prevent repeat offenses.

These are just a few tenets of my program to transform our criminal justice system into one that is restorative, healing-focused, and truly just. Together, we can end mass incarceration by creating a system that rehabilitates and reintegrates, rather than punishes and ostracizes.
