We’ve been told for years that an election was “the most important election of our lifetime,” and usually it was. But this year things go further — it’s not overblown to say this is the one of the most important elections in American history.

For this year, we’re deciding whether or not to continue the American experiment in self-governance. The man who looks like he will be the Republican candidate is literally quoting from Hitler, asking for dictatorial power (he says he needs “immunity” so as not to be held accountable for his actions), and showing all manner of contempt for the traditions of American democracy.

Why is our campaign important? Because I’m the one who can beat him. Trump’s power in America is not the stuff of traditional politics, and traditional politics will not defeat him. His power is psychological and emotional. Trump is bold, and that’s what we need to be. He offers a vision of America that is fear-based, and the only way to override that is with an agenda so full of love and possibility that we bring high what he takes so low.

This is why I'm the one.

The electoral danger for those of us who do not wish to see Trump return to the White House is not that too many people will vote for Trump. The danger is that too many people will stay home. And if all we offer is the status quo politics we are offering now, too many people will feel there’s not that much to be gained in their own lives by even showing up to vote. You and I might not like that, but it’s true. 

In order to win in 2024, we need to be as bold and exciting as….well, to Trump's supporters, he is. We need to offer a new beginning, an economic u-turn, and a way for people to better their lives. We need to offer improved Medicare For All, subsidized child care, tuition free college and tech school, guaranteed affordable housing, and a guaranteed living wage. We need to offer the agenda of an America that aligns with the traditional values of the Democratic Party: unapologetic advocacy for the working people of the United States.

That is what my campaign is about. That is why I am the one to beat Trump. And that is how we will repair America.

Tomorrow in New Hampshire is the first opportunity to begin the turn around. We need to grab history and turn the wheel.
