As we celebrate the 248th anniversary of America's Declaration of Independence, we reflect on the famous words that have echoed through history: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness."

Yet, as these words were signed, hundreds of thousands of enslaved Africans in America remained in chains. This stark contrast reminds us that the promise of equality and freedom has yet to be fully realized for all.
